1. Purpose
This policy defines the rules for the use of Google Chrome on corporate endpoints, specifically addressing the risk of employees signing into Chrome with personal Google accounts and storing corporate credentials, financial data, and sensitive information within those personal accounts.
Its purpose is to prevent passive data exfiltration through browser credential sync, protect corporate information from being stored outside the organisation’s control, and ensure that security controls remain effective across the full endpoint stack.
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All employees in the organisation.
- Contractors, consultants, and external workers who access company systems or information.
- All corporate-managed devices, regardless of operating system.
- Personal devices used for work-related activities (BYOD) that access corporate resources.
3. Background: The Risk of Personal Google Accounts in Chrome
Google Chrome is widely used in corporate environments, but its account-based sync model creates a specific data exfiltration risk that is invisible to most endpoint security tools.
When a user signs into Chrome with a personal Gmail account, everything they save in that browser — passwords, passkeys, credit card numbers, IBANs, browsing history, form data — is synchronised to Google’s infrastructure under that personal account. This data lives outside the organisation’s control indefinitely, regardless of what security tools are deployed on the endpoint.
Why this bypasses your security stack:

The result: a fully managed, fully patched endpoint with a complete security stack can still be silently exfiltrating corporate credentials and financial data to personal Google accounts — continuously, with no alert.
4. Observed Risk Patterns
The following scenarios have been observed in corporate environments and represent active risk:
- Employees saving corporate system passwords in Chrome signed into a personal Gmail account.
- Passkeys for corporate applications created and stored in a personal Google account, making them unrecoverable if the employee leaves or the account is lost.
- Credit card numbers and bank account details (IBANs) stored in Chrome autofill and synced to personal Google accounts.
- Corporate browsing history and form data (including potentially sensitive operational data) synced to personal accounts outside IT visibility.
- Employee offboarding: corporate account deactivated, but data already synced to personal Gmail remains accessible to the former employee indefinitely.
- Personal Gmail account compromised externally: attacker inherits corporate credentials and financial data stored in Chrome sync.
5. Policy Rules
5.1 Personal Google accounts are not permitted in Chrome on corporate devices
Signing into Google Chrome with a personal Gmail account on a corporate device is not permitted. Chrome used for work must either:
- Be signed in with the corporate account only (where a managed Google Workspace account exists), or
- Be used without any Google account sign-in (profile sync disabled).
5.2 Corporate credentials must not be saved in Chrome with a personal account
Employees must not save corporate passwords, passkeys, financial data, or any work-related credentials in a Chrome profile linked to a personal Google account, on any device used for work.
5.3 Recommended browser for corporate use
Microsoft Edge is the recommended corporate browser. It integrates natively with Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft 365, supports enterprise identity separation between work and personal profiles, and is fully manageable via Intune and Group Policy without requiring additional ADMX configuration.
Chrome is permitted for business use only under the configuration requirements in section 6.
5.4 Existing personal account usage
Employees who have been using Chrome with a personal Google account for work must:
- Export any work-related bookmarks to the approved browser.
- Remove corporate passwords and data from their personal Google account’s password manager.
- Sign out of their personal Google account in Chrome on all corporate devices.
- Transition to Edge or a policy-managed Chrome profile within the grace period communicated by IT.
6. Technical Enforcement (Chrome Enterprise via Intune ADMX)
The IT department will enforce compliant Chrome usage through the following Intune ADMX policies deployed to managed endpoints:
6.1 Restrict Chrome sign-in to corporate domain only
Policy: RestrictSigninToPattern Value: *@yourdomain.com
Prevents users from signing into Chrome with any account outside the corporate domain. Personal Gmail accounts will be blocked at sign-in.
6.2 Disable Chrome sync entirely
Policy: SyncDisabled Value: Enabled
Disables all Chrome sync regardless of what account is signed in. Passwords, history, bookmarks, and autofill data will not leave the device via Google sync.
6.3 Control browser sign-in behaviour
Policy: BrowserSignin Value: 0 (Disable browser sign-in) or 1 (Enable but do not force) or 2 (Force sign-in - use only if corporate Google Workspace account exists)
For most organisations without Google Workspace: set to 0 to disable Chrome sign-in entirely.
6.4 Disable Chrome password manager
Policy: PasswordManagerEnabled Value: Disabled
Prevents Chrome from offering to save passwords. Employees should use an IT-approved password manager instead.
6.5 Deployment via Intune
These policies are deployed as ADMX ingestion policies in Microsoft Intune:
- In Intune admin center, go to Devices > Configuration > Create > New policy.
- Select Windows 10 and later, Templates, Administrative Templates.
- Search for the Chrome ADMX settings under Google > Google Chrome.
- Configure the policies above and assign to the relevant device groups.
Note: Chrome ADMX templates must be ingested into Intune before these settings appear. Import from the Chrome Enterprise Bundle available at google.com/chrome/business.
7. Associated Risks
Use of personal Google accounts in Chrome on corporate devices may result in:
- Passive, continuous exfiltration of corporate credentials and financial data to personal Google accounts outside IT control.
- GDPR non-compliance if personal data processed for work is stored in uncontrolled third-party infrastructure.
- Unrecoverable access loss if passkeys for corporate systems are stored in a personal account that becomes unavailable.
- Persistent data exposure after employee offboarding, with no technical means of recovery.
- Corporate credential compromise if the employee’s personal Gmail account is breached externally.
8. Consequences of Non-Compliance
Violations of this policy will be handled in accordance with the organisation’s disciplinary framework and applicable labour legislation.
- Unintentional / first instance: formal notice, mandatory remediation, user education on approved browser usage.
- Repeated non-compliance or deliberate data exfiltration: escalation to HR and management, potential disciplinary action.
Any suspected data exposure through browser credential sync must be reported to IT and Cybersecurity immediately.

10. Validity and Review
This policy comes into force on the date of its approval and remains valid for one year, at which point it will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
Adaptation Guide
When adapting this template to your organisation:
- Replace
yourdomain.comin section 6.1 with your corporate email domain. - Review section 5.3 and confirm your approved browser list.
- If your organisation has Google Workspace, adjust section 6.3 to use BrowserSignin = 2 and restrict to the corporate Google domain.
- Define the grace period in section 5.4 based on your remediation timeline.
- If you have an approved password manager, reference it explicitly in section 6.4.
- Align section 8 with your HR disciplinary framework and local labour law.
